A Beautiful Lady
December 13, 2022
Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful lady. Everyone in her town would greet her warmly wherever she went, showering her with praise.
"You are an angel, my lady," some would say. Others whispered, "You are the very charm of nature itself," or, "Having your presence nearby makes the air taste sweet." Everywhere she walked within the town lines, she was met with these exact same heartfelt appeals.
The town was always full of good fellows and friendly folk who treated everyone they met with exceptional kindness. Yet, regardless of the joyful, blossoming way she was greeted, a deep shadow of doubt always lingered in her mind.
I. The Silent Agony
Because she lived in a mirrorless world, she was tormented by her own blank reflection. She would look up to the heavens and ponder her existence in isolation:
"Oh God, why do You torture me so? Am I truly as beautiful as they say? How can I ever truly know myself if I do not possess a single device to look upon my own face?"
Frustrated by the agony of not knowing her own countenance, she decided to leave everything behind. She set out on a grand quest across realms to find a world that possessed mirrors. She wanted the absolute truth: was she genuinely beautiful, or was it all an illusion?
Before passing the town gates, she looked back one last time.
"Oh, this lovely town... your people flatter me so. But I must discover if I truly deserve your praises. My Lord, show me the way to the world of mirrors."
II. The Journey and the Glass
She traveled far and wide. She crossed vast oceans, braved uncharted seas, and journeyed through entirely different worlds, yet a realm with mirrors eluded her for many long years.
Then, at long last, she stumbled into a strange, distant realm. And there, standing before her, was a mirror.
With a racing heart, she stepped forward and looked into the silvered glass.
She instantly froze, completely petrified. The horror was absolute and devastating. Staring right back at her from the reflection was a terrifying, hideous monster that struck a deep, paralyzing fear into her soul.
Panicked, she turned and fled as fast as her feet could carry her, running toward the local townsfolk of that strange world for help. But as she looked at them, she saw only monsters. Every single face in that realm was a twisted nightmare. Overwhelmed by terror, she ran as far away as she could, leaving that wretched mirror world behind forever.
III. The Return
As she crossed back into her own realm, she wept bitterly, her voice breaking against the wind.
"Oh Lord, why have You shackled my mind with this curse? Now I must live forever in the prison of my own self-doubt."
A beautiful lady she was, and a beautiful lady she remained. She finally walked back into her sweet home town, where everyone rushed out to greet her with their usual warmth and adoration. But though she was home, the mirror had left its mark, and she would never look at her own beauty the same way again.
